Dec 22-27

This week was Christmas week!! We worked very hard to make sure our speeches and songs were perfect. Banana class sang the song, "I'm a Little Snowman" and the all kindergarten song, "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer". In addition to all the practices we did for the Christmas performance, we also continued working with the tools vocabulary. We also did more work with addition using the marshmallow math. Everyone loves counting so much, every chance we had free moments in class this week, the kids would practice their skills at addition.

To learn more about shapes, we used play do to create shapes and count their sides.

At the end of the week, we had art class. This week, we got to make santas' elves.

We colored our elves and then cut them out. Using push pins, we added the elf arms and legs so the elves were able to move and dance!

We continued learning more letters, both upper and lower case. We did a lot of practice sorting the letters to differentiate the big and small letters. We also played a new favorite game of bean bag toss to increase our use of letter specific words. Everyone had to think of a different vocabulary letter for the word A (for example) each time the bean bag was passed. Later in the week, we used an alphabet board game to practice new words and make all the letter sounds.

I hope everyone had a Very Merry Christmas!!

Dec 8-12

In this week, we continued on our theme of neighborhood places. We have also taken to learning about other places we commonly see, like the beach and the police station. This week we learned about objects in the classroom. We discussed the things we need to bring with us to school: backpack, pencil, books, lunch box, etc.
We worked on skills of differentiation using coloring worksheets. It was also important to continue strengthens our writing skills, especially with the numbers, using addition then tracing to practice skills.

In phonics class, we have worked up through the letter T. We continue to practice out tracing skills and I have been increasing the amount of work they have to write on their own. We are also working on the order of the alphabet, knowing which letter comes after another. We also do a lot of activities to learn new vocabulary. The favorite game recently has been a bean bag toss game.

We have the best time with our art craft, we handprint Santa Claus! We traced our hands and even used our hand print to make a Santa hat! We added a beard and eyes and cute Santa nose!

First week of December

For the first week of December, we began a new theme, the neighborhood! We learned about places that are near us: the police station, fire department, park...etc. we have used flash cards to know each place by sight. We also began working on association with things that belong in each place, such as a fire truck belongs at the fire department. We also have continued to practice our shapes and number skills. We use simple math to color by number. We also strengthen our fine motor skills by cutting projects and creating shapes. We have begun working very diligently on our Christmas performance. For our class song, we will be doing I'm a little snowman. Everyone agreed on Rudolph the red nosed reindeer for everyone to sing together! We have had great fun learning the dance and all the words.

For phonics, we continue to work through the alphabet. We learn to differentiate lower case and upper case letters. We have worked up through letter S. The focus has been to strengthen our writing. We also use songs to learn new words for each letter. The kids love games that require their matching skills of objects to the correct letter.

Our first project of the semester was a snow flake!!

Last week of November

November has officially come to an end. We end the month with a special celebration of thanksgiving! We got to eat turkey. It was a delicious treat.
We finished our theme of the senses. We now learned well that eyes see, ears hear, mouths taste, nose smells, and hands and feet touch. We did many experiments to test our senses.
We also did really fun projects to learn about thanksgiving. Such as making a finger print turkey and making a turkey hat!

In phonics class, we have gotten all the way to letter Q. We constantly practice our writing skills of both the big and small letters. We have also been working to increase our vocabulary with worksheets and using real life objects to make the letter sound to the alphabet letters we know.

Nov 10-14

We are now full swing into November and the theme of fall. The kids have been learning words that talk about fall and plants, such as: jacket, turkey, branch, trunk, leaf, roots, and hat.
We have learned about how a plant grows and the things it needs to live (water, air, and sun). We have done very well learning the vocabulary. The kids are able to identify all the vocabulary flash cards without any problems. We have also worked on our skills at cutting and pasting, to make sure these are skills we can do without the teacher's help.

For phonics, we have worked on my M,N, and O. Not only is it important to learn new vocabulary, but also how to trace the letters. The kids are very proficient in their pronunciation of the letters and they know how to correctly say many words. Primaryily, I want them to learn how to write. We have done many activities to practice their writing.

Welcome November

October was a blast Banana class!

October ended with a great and spooky celebration. Banana class celebrated the final week with many themed activities, such as: ghost in the graveyard snacks and Frankenstein and witch hat painting. We practiced very diligently to memorize a speech to give at the Halloween party. Our class song was, H A double L O W double E N Spells Halloween. We also learned the Monster Mash to sing with the other classes as well.
We also worked hard on our themes of family members and rooms of the house. The kids can easily talk about people in their family and describe them. They are also able to identify objects that are found in specific rooms of the house.

Yummy ghost in the graveyard snack!

In phonics, we have made it about half way through the alphabet! We continue to expand our vocabulary with each letter. It's also been important to correctly identify upper and lower cases of each letter. The kids are getting very good at writing letters!

Now it's a new month, November! Time for new themes, holidays, and Fall fun :)

October 20-24

This week we have continued on our theme of learning rooms of the house and the objects that we find in the house. So far the kids have learned and can now easily identify bed, couch, lamp, toilet,  bathtub, table, and chair. We have incorporate the topic of family with the household rooms units too!

We have continued to learn about halloween and trick or treating! The kids now know their dance for the class song, Monster Mash

For phonics, we are reviewing all the letters we have learned from A-L. We are working not only to recognize the letter, but to learn to write it as well. The kids are learning both big and small versions of all the letters. We also play lots of games with flash cards to get the kids to recognize objects associate with each letter sound with as much speed as possible! Plus, they really love it :)

October

In the month of October, we have worked on two class themes so far. The first theme was all about family. We learned the members of our family, such as: mother, father, son, daughter, sister, grandma...and many more. We created a family tree to show how many people were in our family.
We also did matching games to recognize family members with speed.
Our second theme has been about the house. We have been learning rooms in the house and objects that can be found in the rooms. To incorporate the first theme, we play games to guess what family members are in what rooms. The kids are getting really good at telling the rooms of the house apart.

For phonetics we have learned about letters H through L. It has been important to have the kids work on writing skills. They can clearly identify big letters versus small letters. We do a lot of sorting activities to show how well we know the difference between big and small alphabet letters. To practice our letter sounds, the kids love to use flash cards! Each card has a picture and the kids yell out the beginning letter sound as quickly as they can. The competition is so fun for the kids :D

As Halloween gets closer, the kids are getting ready for their performance!!! They are very excited.

Goodbye September

September has officially come to an end!
This week the kids are working on a new theme all about family. We will learn and discuss family members and how to describe them. Examples being: who is older, younger, taller, or shorter. I am hoping by the end of the week we can make a family tree and all the kids will be able to draw pictures of their moms and dad, brothers, sisters, and grandparents.

We are continuing our phonics by working through the alphabet sounds and focusing on writing the letters. I am trying to broaden their vocabulary by bring in activities that focus on our letter for the day. We use a lot of flash cards and memory games (which the kids really love).
